1000 Mile Reflections

Since I met Kevin, we’ve shared past life experiences as well as hopes and dreams for the future. One of his more memorable past experiences was seeing the Pictured Rocks, in Munising, MI. He’s wanted to share this spectacular scene of creation and the earth’s history with me since the beginning of our relationship.

We’ve talked about taking a camping trip together to the Upper Peninsula for over 6 years now, with this destination in mind. Now we’ve finally arrived. We began this trip far before it actually started. I’ve learned that getting to a milestone in life starts with hopes, dream-building, prioritizing, planning but being flexible, character building, surrender, patience, and trust.

In his heart, a man plans his course, but the Lord directs his steps. | Proverbs 16:9

We started our journey together this way, and with some action to make life different, although sometimes a bit scary, we’ve reached a milestone. From full time jobs, chickens, family, and a farm house to care for, we’ve reached a 1000-mile milestone in this new chapter with our dog, our God, a Land Rover with just what we need, a baby in my belly and each-other. Our first 1000 miles clocked on this trip landed us right in Munising with a view of the Pictured Rocks in the horizon.

They say that it’s not about the destination, but about the journey it takes to get there. That is totally true in this case. This destination meant a lot to us, but it was about everything we’ve done to arrive in this place, with hope that looks forward to the path that lies ahead.

SIDE NOTE :

As I’m sitting in a coffee shop to get Wi-Fi, writing this blog post, I got a phone call from our Realtor (my dad Kevin Gerkin), with the news that we’ve sold our house. A few nights ago, a scheduled half-hour showing turned into 1 & a half hour showing, followed by calls from the realtor and questions about the home from the clients. After speaking with my dad, I emailed a detailed list of replies back.

I’ve been praying that our home goes to someone who sees its beauty and character, enjoys the peacefulness, our wonderful neighbors, and has what it takes to make it shine with life again as it once did. Those words, “I think we’ve sold your house” made tears well up and laughter cry out all at the same time. Talk about timing and milestones! The offer was written yesterday and will be accepted on Monday September 19th. I encourage you to keep doing what you can within your circle of control, and give up the rest to our Father above, because His timing is perfect.
